Indoor Air Quality

Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs)

Newer homes are built tight to save energy, which is great for your bills but rough on fresh air. Without a way to swap stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air, things can get stuffy and odors hang around longer than they should.

An energy recovery ventilator solves that. It brings in fresh air and pushes stale air out while transferring much of the heat and moisture between the two streams, so you ventilate without throwing away the comfort you paid for. We install these for Vacaville homes.

How an ERV works

The ERV passes outgoing and incoming air through a core that transfers heat and humidity between them. In summer it helps keep the fresh air from coming in hot and muggy, and in winter it helps hold onto warmth. You get fresh air without the full energy hit of just opening a window.

  • Brings in fresh outdoor air continuously
  • Pushes out stale, used indoor air
  • Recovers much of the energy between the air streams
  • Helps keep tight homes from feeling stuffy
  • Can help dilute indoor odors and stale air

Is an ERV right for your home?

ERVs make the most sense in tightly built or well-sealed homes that don't get much natural air exchange. We'll look at how your home is built and how it's ventilated now, then tell you honestly whether an ERV is worth it for you.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an ERV and just running a fan?

A fan moves air but throws away the energy in it. An ERV brings in fresh air while recovering much of the heat and moisture, so you ventilate without wasting comfort.

Will an ERV make my home harder to heat or cool?

That's the point of the energy recovery. It transfers heat and moisture between the air streams to soften the impact of bringing in outside air.

Does my home actually need one?

Tighter, well-sealed homes benefit most. We'll assess your home and give you a straight answer instead of selling you equipment you don't need.
